When Life Throws You a Curveball

By Holly Taylor-Fry, Memory Care Director of The Heights at Avery Heights

Life is full of unpredictable events, both good and bad. Sometimes, these events can result in a significant change in our lifestyles and abilities. When the unexpected happens, it can be challenging to adjust and find a new sense of normalcy. This is especially true when we experience an acute event that changes our brain function, takes away a beloved part of our life, such as a family member or favorite pet. In this blog post, we will explore practical plans and strategies to help us regain or let go of previous abilities when faced with such events.

Acute illness or injury

When we experience a sudden illness or injury that affects our ability to function, such as a stroke or a broken limb, it is essential to have a plan for recovery and rehabilitation. This may involve working with healthcare professionals, such as physical or occupational therapists, and being patient with ourselves as we regain our abilities. It is also important to recognize that recovery may be complex and may require a new sense of community or support to help fill in any functional gaps.

Natural disasters

Natural disasters such as hurricanes, fires, or floods can result in losing possessions, homes, and even family or friends. In this case, rebuilding is often necessary, but it can be challenging to know where to start. It is important to take one step at a time, find ways to involve the community in rebuilding efforts, and seek out support as needed. It may also be valuable to reframe expectations and find new joy in previously overlooked aspects of life.

Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an acute event that has had a significant impact on daily life and brain function for many. It has challenged individuals to find new ways of working, communicating, and maintaining mental and physical health. Strategies for managing this change include setting up routines, taking breaks, and seeking virtual community support. It may also be helpful to adjust our expectations during this time, acknowledging that it is a challenging time for everyone.

Loss of family, friends, or pets

When we experience the loss of family, friends, or pets, it is common to feel a sense of loss of identity and purpose. It is crucial to seek out support, whether through family and friends, therapy, or support groups. We can honor the lives of those we lost by focusing on the positive memories they left us with and finding ways to carry on their legacy in our own lives.

Significant moves

Moving can be a huge life event that affects our sense of community, identity, and daily routine. To help adjust to a significant move, focus on building new relationships, exploring the new area, and finding ways to stay connected with the old community and family members. Setting goals and finding new hobbies or interests can create a sense of purpose in a new environment.

Conclusion

Despite the challenges of change, it is possible to adapt and find a new sense of normal after an acute event. Strategies such as seeking out community support, adjusting expectations, taking things one step at a time, finding new hobbies or interests, and recognizing the value of therapy can all help us regain or let go of previous abilities. While it may take some time to adjust, it is possible to find joy and fulfillment in a new sense of normalcy.
